The Idol

I pride myself on being able to handily discuss matters of pop culture without having to completely sully myself through immersion. Usually, promoters and marketers of the shows people care about (American Idol, Lost, Desperate Housewives, etc.) are so well-publicized, that I'm informed of what's happening just by existing. Somehow, the information just seems to seep into my skin.

I always swore, though, if I ever began to remotely care about American Idol, that's when I'd beg you to shoot me. I don't even care about how bad the singers are (I know, some people say they watch just for that. That's fine. I won't begrudge you or judge you (or even E.L. Fudge you! (yes, again, I'm a shitty rapper)).

Truth is, I hate that kind of singing -- that diva-esque belting. I used to get trapped in an elevator where I lived all the time with this one chick who'd calm herself by singing Dianne Warren ballads.

Two girls enter. One girl leaves!

(Okay, nothing happened. I just glared at her a lot and pressed the alarm button more.)

Excellent point, and may a red-hot poker be thrust through my eyeballs if I ever have cable again, much less watch any of it. My TV only gets DVDs. I did hear something that proves my point about :Idol: . Apparently Ryan Seashore said that more votes had been cast on Idol than for any Presidential candidate, ever. If you think about that for a second, you know how much trouble we're in.

Great post!

You're absolutely right. I was so horrified and disgusted when one of my favorite e-stores made sweatshirts in honor of who won American Idol.

I felt a weird mixture of pride and a bit like a schmuck that I didn't know who the hell they were talking about at first...I think that show isn't really about who is the most annoying pop singer; it's more about watching people get fed to the lions and made fun of by everybody.

Great site, great post.

I know what you mean, I absorb so much I don't even need to watch anything. And reading entertainment mags, I am a sponge for useless celebrity trivia which is part of the point of my blog.
Don't fret, calling it The Idol is a bit alarming but you can tell yourself you are keeping your finger on the pulse of pop culture for your art. Thats what I do.

I said FRET. Don't fret, have no regret. Taylor Hicks looks GD 45, that doesn't rhyme!
